The Importance Of Breathing Exercises In Yoga

For many people with only a passing acquaintance to Yoga and what it is all about the main thing which springs to mind are the physical exercises which involve holding static postures, developing flesibility and balance and so on. Perhaps they also know that there is some connection with 'all that eastern stuff' about chakras and so on. But what many people do not necessarily realize is that breathing exercises and meditation are actually at the heart of what Yoga is all about.

In addition to being an essential part of the familiar postures and exercises breathing techniques are also used to draw in energy into the body, and during meditation.

Aside from the simple pranayama techniques for increasing the vital energy of the body (see video below) the most famous is the 'Fire Breathing' technique from Kundalini Yoga, which comes in many forms but usually involves alternating between very deep slow breaths and very quick panting breaths. You can find a video showing you how to perform this below as well.
