An Introduction To Breathing Exercises For Beginners

Breathing exercises are a major part of many different traditions of meditation, can be used as part of an exercise program to improve lung capacity and functioning, or as a relaxation exercise to help combat stress. Because there are so many different techniques, each designed with a different purpose in mind, I cannot cover all of them in this one article. Fortunately I don't have to! In addition to a few quick guides to some top techniques you will also find a list of links to other articles which I have published here on hubpages which offer a more in depth guide to a variety of different breathing exercises. I hope you find them useful.

Three Easy Breathing Exercises For Beginners

  1.  For Relaxation: One of the best techniques for relaxation is also one of the easiest. It simply involves taking three long, deep, slow breaths, and then returning to your natural pattern. This can be done as a way to calm yourself done if you are stressed, angry or whatever, or can be done repeatedly at home as a kind of meditation or relaxation practice.
  2. To Increase Lung Capacity: Count to 4 as you inhale, then pause for 4, exahle for 4, and then pause again for another count of 4. Repeat this until it starts to feel like you are straining. A little bit of discomort is ok, but you shouldn't feel like you are straining to hold your breath in.
  3. For Meditation: Simply focussing on your breathing and trying to let go of everything else is the most common one, but you can also do the same as in number two, but with a count of 4-2-4-2 instead of all the fours. Again try to focus singularly on your respiration and let go of any other thoughts which pop into your mind.
